Who We Are

Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria, USA (AKISAN) connects Akwa Ibom sons and daughters in the United States, preserves our culture, and builds strong bridges to our homeland. We are a community of professionals, families, students, and leaders committed to unity, service, and shared progress.

AKISAN is a nationwide umbrella body for Akwa Ibom citizens living in the United States, working together through local chapters and national leadership structures.


Overview


We provide a common home for Akwa Ibom natives and their families in the U.S.—connecting people, sharing resources, and standing as a bridge between our diaspora community and Akwa Ibom State. Through programs, events, and partnerships, we support our members and contribute to the development of our homeland. Our gaol is to:


  • To promote, encourage and foster unity among the citizens of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, both at home and abroad.
  • To support and promote various charitable organizations by cooperating with any such organization, participating in its activities or contributing to such organization.
  • To encourage and support the educational, professional and legitimate business aspirations of all Akwa Ibom State citizens, provided those aspirations are consistent with the best interest of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria and its citizens.


History


Since the late 1980s, AKISAN has grown from small clusters of Akwa Ibom citizens into a structured national association with chapters across major U.S. cities. Over the years, our Annual Conventions, constitutional reviews, and chapter-driven initiatives have shaped a strong, enduring platform for service, advocacy, and cultural preservation.

AKISAN Mission & Values


Our mission is to promote the unity, welfare, and progress of Akwa Ibom citizens at home and abroad, within the framework of a united Nigeria.


  • Unity – Bringing Akwa Ibom people together across cities, generations, and chapters.
  • Progress – Advancing education, economic empowerment, and social wellbeing.
  • Service – Responding to needs through programs, advocacy, and direct support.
  • Partnership – Collaborating with governments, nonprofits, and other organizations.
  • Integrity – Managing our affairs with transparency, accountability, and respect.


Constitution


The AKISAN National Constitution is our guiding framework. It defines membership through local chapters, sets out our purposes and objectives, establishes our leadership structures, and governs how we manage finances and make decisions. It ensures that AKISAN is run fairly, consistently, and in the best interest of our members.

Our leadership structure balances vision, representation, and financial oversight, ensuring that every chapter has a voice and every decision has a clear line of accountability.

National Officers


The National Executive Committee leads the Association’s day-to-day operations and implements policies approved by the governing bodies. The team includes:



Together, they coordinate national programs, represent AKISAN externally, and support chapters across the country.


Former Presidents


Our former presidents helped build the foundation that AKISAN stands on today. Through their leadership, the Association expanded its reach, formalized its structures, and deepened its impact in both the U.S. and Akwa Ibom State. We honor their legacy. Visit Former Presidents page.


Organizational Groups


AKISAN operates through three major governing branches:


  1. National Executive Committee – Executes policies, coordinates national activities, and represents the Association.
  2. Council of Chapter Presidents – Serves as the policy-making body, representing all chapters in good standing.
  3. Board of Trustees – Provides financial discipline, oversees assets, and safeguards the Association’s long-term interests.


These three branches work together through the Joint National Council, which harmonizes decisions and resolves major issues affecting the Association.


Committees


Committees turn strategy into action. AKISAN relies on both standing and ad-hoc committees to plan, execute, and monitor key initiatives.


Standing Committees include:

  • Electoral Committee
  • Emergency Trust Fund Committee


Ad-Hoc Committees are created as needed, such as:

These committees enable AKISAN to respond quickly to opportunities, meet community needs, and execute national priorities effectively.

About AKISAN USA Inc.

Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria (USA), Inc.TM (AKISAN USA) is a 501C(3) non-profit organization that was established on September 23, 1987.


AKISAN USA is a membership-based, apolitical organization. Membership is chapter-based.


AKISAN USA has the following sets of objectives:


  • To promote, encourage and foster unity among the citizen of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria both at home and abroad.
  • To promote economic, educational, cultural, scientific and social progress of Akwa Ibom State within the framework of one Nigeria.
  • To cooperate with and support bona-fide Nigerian Associations in the United States of America and encourage members of the Association to join Nigerian Associations and participate in promoting the interest of Nigeria both at home and abroad.
  • To encourage and support the educational, professional and legitimate business aspirations of all Akwa Ibom State citizens, provided those aspirations are consistent with the best interest of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria and its citizens.
  • To act as a liaison between our government, and others, including other organizations both government and non-governmental, and the members of this Association and citizens of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria in the United States of America.
